Here’s a question I’m hearing more often in enterprise security reviews:
“Show us how you manage AI model risk.”
Plenty of teams with a clean ISO 27001 certificate go quiet at that point. They have their 93 Annex A controls covering access, encryption, logging and supplier security. All of it is solid, and none of it was written for systems that learn, drift, hallucinate, or make decisions about people.
That’s the gap ISO/IEC 42001 was built to close.
The overlap between the two standards is real. Both share the same management-system backbone, so your ISMS gives you a head start. But 42001 adds requirements your current program almost certainly doesn’t address:
- AI system impact assessments. These look at effects on individuals and society, not just on your organization.
- Data governance for AI. This covers provenance, quality, labeling, and how training data is handled.
- Lifecycle controls. These run from design and validation through monitoring for drift and retirement.
- Transparency and human oversight. These cover who can explain a decision, and who can override it.
- Third-party AI. This means knowing which vendors, APIs and embedded copilots are making decisions inside your stack.
The pressure is no longer theoretical. Enterprise questionnaires now include AI sections, auditors are asking AI-specific questions, and the EU AI Act’s obligations are phasing in. If you’re in B2B SaaS or financial services, your customers will ask before your auditor does.
I’ve walked an organization through ISO 42001 Stage 2 certification on the first attempt. The biggest lesson was that teams who build on their existing ISMS move far faster than teams who treat AI governance as a separate project.
